At CodeBoxx, we have graduates from all walks of life. Cooks, psychologist, crane operator through carpenter without forgetting Doctor are great examples. The graduate’s story that we present to you today is quite unique, like many others, but is a particularly special one, since in addition to finding a passion in technology, Mathieu was able to combine that to a passion he already had: teaching. Mathieu is a graduate of the 1st cohort and holds a degree in teaching of music. More details in the article below.
Mathieu Houde, November 25th, 2019
In what seems to me now to be another life, I was a music teacher. I had the epiphany of my career choice early in high school, and it was an unequivocal decision. In my mind, my path was drawn for the rest of my life. So I began my studies in music, first at the Cégep and then at University by pursuing a degree in teaching of music. It only took one internship to make me realize that the world of public education was not made for me. So I forked into another specialty in order to start on my own at the end of my studies.
After a few years teaching privately, I wanted to do something else. So I enrolled in a Certificate in Computer Science, and after half a session I was already tired of the slow pace of the courses. At the same time, I had the chance to hear about the new technology school that was to be launched soon in Quebec: CodeBoxx. The concept immediately interested me: an intensive program, focused on in-demand useful skills and which in addition guarantees a job upon graduation.
So I passed through the bootcamp, and had the chance to land a job at Fungo. Those who were my mentors during the program became my colleagues and I could not have asked for a better start. I learned a lot from them in a very short time thanks to them, and I especially thank Mr. Rémi Gagnon, CEO of Fungo, for giving me this first chance. Working for Fungo also allowed me to keep a foot at CodeBoxx and to be able to coach new cohorts of students. I was able to use my teaching experience and new knowledge as a programmer to help those who were going through the same process as me.
It is therefore with great pride that I saw the extraordinary 2nd cohort complete the bootcamp and start their new career in technology. Then, It was time for Cohort #3 to begin. It was during this cohort that I had the opportunity to take a little more responsibility as a coach. This 3rd group of students, made up of incredible people, made me want to make an even greater contribution to CodeBoxx, and an unexpected opportunity presented itself. As we say “Timing is everything”: the position of meta-coach was available for me at the end of the cohort. Thus, 1 year after having completed the program myself, I was offered this role. I would like to thank the cohort of the summer of 2019, without whom the transition to this new responsibility would have been much more difficult.
I am now the Chief Program Officer of CodeBoxx. I have been able to combine my passion for pedagogy with the one I have for computer science for over a year now. I feel very proud to be able to guide all those who are looking to find in CodeBoxx the very same thing I have found: a stepping stone to a new career in the fastest and most effective way possible.
