At CodeBoxx, we have graduates with various backgrounds. We have some who wanted to improve their situation, but we also have people who were not necessarily in a bad spot, they were just not happy with what they were doing and didn’t see a future for them in their previous line of work. It requires a high degree of courage to give up a job with great conditions and take a leap of faith of 4 months that will change your life. That’s what Raphaël Vallée did. Here is what he had to say!
Raphaël Vallée, August 5th
I am working at a head hunting company in Quebec city. I’ve been there for a year and a half, brought in good sales and I’m good at what I do. Because of internal issues, the Quebec director leaves and there it is : they offer me the job. After 4 years at Laval University, where I got my Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Relations, and only a year and a half at the firm, I was offered a job that would give me great responsibilities and very good conditions. The problem ? It felt empty. Was this where I wanted to settle in life ? No, it was not.
Like many other young adults my age, I went through college and University without really knowing what I wanted to do. The only thing I knew I wanted was to maximize time with my friends and minimize time at school. For me, school has always been easy, especially said soft skills, non-technical skills. I could write a report in one night or come up with an oral presentation with little to no preparation and still get good grades. After college, even with great grades, I still took the easy path and enrolled in a generic program, without really knowing what I wanted to do in life. Why do math if I don’t want to be a doctor or a chemist ?
Fast forward a few years later and here I am, with an amazing job offer, but still wanting to throw myself out the window. There had to be a better way, a more meaningful way. Back to April 2018. A simple glimpse of what my future looked like if I continued this path was enough for me to make a decision. CodeBoxx.
I’ve always loved technology, and I was always curious about coding, artificial intelligence and information technology in general. When I evaluated my options for my big career move, no other option seemed better than CodeBoxx. A job in IT after an only 16 weeks of bootcamp ? Sir, yes sir.
It’s important to note that you can’t take anything for granted at CodeBoxx. Before being initiated to coding and information technology, you will learn that magic doesn’t exist and that the results you’ll get will only come after lots and lots of sweat, tears and mental transcendence.
I now work as a web developer in one of the biggest companies in Quebec city, and I have never loved my job that much. I still pinch myself every day that I am paid to do this. It is very challenging on a daily basis and comes with a lot of discomfort, but I know what to do if I want to be up to the task. Nothing is better than loving what you do, knowing what you aspire to be and making every small step to get there. Hard skills don’t come cheap.
